Welcome

A suburban street at night, in dense fog. Streetlights lend an eerie yellow hue around trees in stark black silhouette.

Welcome to Weirding Words, the home of Mathew Gostelow's writing on the web.

I'm Mat. When I'm not doing marketing stuff for my job, I write short stories and poems - often with a creepy, uncanny, or dreamlike mood.

I recently co-wrote a novella with my friend JP Relph. It's a pacy, compelling supernatural thriller, called Watcher.

I also have a collection of flash fiction Connections, exploring small moments and big feelings, available now.

[NB: This book was signed by Naked Cat, who took people's money and disappeared in a cloud of smoke and betrayed trust. In a bid to salvage something from this crappy situation, I'm now selling the book as a PDF, instant download, for the price of a coffee.]

I've also been lucky enough to be published in a number of literary magazines and anthologies over the past couple of years - both online and in print.

You can read a bit more about me HERE, and find a chronological list of my publications HERE.

If you want to get in touch, you can find me on Twitter, on BlueSky (not very active), or reach me by email. Links to my books and social profiles are all collected here.

Additionally, I'm a member of Writer's HQ and have found their free courses, supportive community and weekly writing prompts to be an incredible source of inspiration. If you're starting out with this creative writing malarkey, I highly recommend you join.

Finally, I've started a newsletter, sharing monthly updates, writing prompts and tips, links to submission calls, and other groovy things. If that sounds good to you, why not sign up to get the latest updates direct to your inbox:
